 STEAM Focus

Foothills has a school-wide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) program.
The goal of STEAM is to help children develop the skills to solve real-world problems by exploring different points of view; to be innovators by creating new methods, ideas and products; to be communicators by sharing ideas and learning with others; to be hands-on learners by investigating with tools, objects and materials; to be creative and critical thinkers by asking, imagining and analyzing new ideas; and decision makers by imagining solutions and choosing the best one. Below are some examples of recent STEAM projects our students have participated in:

  • Kindergarteners who were studying marine biology designed a plan to clean up the ocean and local bodies of water. They learned about ocean life and trash pollution and its effects on plants and animals. They engineered a tool to help clean up the ocean. They then tested their tool by using it to remove plastics from kiddie pools.
  • Fifth-graders used technology to research the systems of the human body. Some students learned this content in Spanish through the school's Spanish immersion program. (In 5th grade, Science and Social Studies are taught in Spanish.) Students were required to engineer a body system using common household objects. The fifth graders then presented their engineered projects to teach younger students about various body systems.

 Spanish Immersion

Foothills offers a Spanish immersion program (K-5) in which students learn grade level content standards in a second language. Students are immersed in the language for a portion of their day, and depending on the grade level, may learn science, social studies, math, and literacy immersed in the Spanish language.

Students are able to demonstrate their learning and develop a love of language in a variety of ways:

  • 4th graders learn all about electricity and circuits in Spanish. They build actual circuits with a goal of lighting a lightbulb and discuss open and closed circuits with their tablemates in Spanish.
  • 1st graders have the opportunity to create and present personal timelines. First grade teachers partner with families to determine important life events of students, and create a timeline in Spanish based upon these events.
